Wolverhampton Wanderers’ potential signing of VfB Stuttgart and Austria striker Saša Kalajdžic could set up an exciting season for the club this campaign.

That is according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the club’s potential transfer business, heading into the final week of the transfer window.

Bruno Lage has been backed after a slow start to transfer business this summer, with the club signing three new permanent additions, in Burnley and Republic of Ireland centre-back Nathan Collins, Valencia and Portugal forward Gonçalo Guedes, and Sporting Lisbon midfielder and fellow Portugal international Matheus Nunes.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Wolves have approached Stuttgart regarding the signing of Kalajdžic, who is reportedly capable of doing “crazy things” in the air according to pundit Marcel Reif, having offered around £12.7m for the striker, with the Bundesliga club wanting £16.9m-£21.2m for the 25-year-old’s services.

And O’Rourke believes that the West Midlands club’s biggest problem is their lack of goals, with the signing of Kalajdžic potentially going some way to solve that.

“They have made a couple of big signings in recent weeks as well in Guedes and Nunes, so obviously Wolves are backing Bruno Lage and they’re trying to build a team here to go and have a good season in the Premier League.

“The problem for Wolves has always been, probably goalscoring has been an issue.

“So, if they can bring in Kalajdžic to solve those problems, Wolves can look forward to a good season, I think.”

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments

We believe that Wolves fans will agree with O’Rourke in that their main problem has been their lack of a top-class goalscorer, since Raúl Jiménez’s shocking fractured skull injury, suffered back in November 2020.

The Mexican striker has struggled to hit the same levels following his return to Premier League football in August 2021, as he had done prior to the head injury, leaving Lage’s side particularly short of goals.

The 15-time Austria international’s goalscoring record has been impressive when fit, having scored six goals and providing two assists in 15 Bundesliga appearances last season, according to Transfermarkt.

Therefore, we believe that if Fosun can get a deal between £13m-£17m over the line for Kalajdžic, then that would represent smart business from the club, and could mean that the Lage’s side could be in for an exciting season this campaign.
