Phil Hay has suggested that Leeds will not be signing Dwight Gayle in January due to the finances on the deal.

In reply to a tweet about players Hay would like to see at Leeds from other Championship clubs, one fan asked if there would be any movement on Gayle.

However, the Athletic man dismissed that possibility – due to the cost of bringing the Newcastle striker to Elland Road.

Would Gayle be a good signing for Leeds?

Hay claimed that the Whites like him but that the finances will not work.

Why won’t Gayle go to Leeds?

Leeds are under a lot of pressure from Financial Fair Play and as a result of that, are unlikely to be able to bring in any permanent signings until next summer.

If Newcastle were to let Gayle go, they are said to want £15m and would not accept anything less than that.

This would rule Leeds out of the running and leave a club like Nottingham Forest in pole position to seal the former Crystal Palace man’s signature.

A loan deal would also be difficult for the Whites as Gayle earns £40,000 per week on Tyneside, and unless the Toon agreed to subsidise his wages, there is no way that Leeds could afford Gayle.

Why do they want him?

Dwight Gayle is a proven Championship goalscorer with a record of over a goal every two games.

He has scored 20+ goals for both Newcastle and West Bromwich Albion and overall has 59 in 100 matches.

Leeds’ top scorer is currently Patrick Bamford with seven, and then after that, it is Eddie Nketiah with five.

Gayle would guarantee goals and, in the process, pretty much secure promotion to the top-flight, but according to Phil Hay Leeds, will not have the money to get Gayle, and they will just have to hope that a fellow Championship rival does not snap the 29-year-old up.
