Motherwell rising star Stuart McKinstry is set to join Leeds United in the summer, according to a club insider.

The unofficial Leeds academy account, which is a reliable source of news about the club, claim the 16-year-old winger is headed to Elland Road from the Scottish Premiership club.

This comes after McKinstry was called up to the Scotland Under-17s squad for three European qualifying clashes during the current international break.

Good move for Leeds?

McKinstry is bursting with potential and his place in the Scotland Under-17s squad is proof of how highly rated he is in his homeland. The son of ex-Motherwell player John has been linked with a number of clubs south of the border in recent months, including Southampton, and that suggests he could be destined for the top. McKinstry has yet to make his ‘Well’ senior bow but has already been on their bench despite his tender years. Leeds is increasingly looking the place to be for talented youngsters eager for a pathway to senior elite football. Marcelo Bielsa has demonstrated immense faith in the club’s rising stars this season and McKinstry only needs look at the progress of teenagers Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton to see how age is no barrier at Elland Road.

Likely to happen?

Speculation first emerged in January that Leeds might sign McKinstry in a deal costing an initial £150,000 rising to a potential £400,000. There has been no confirmation from the player, or either club, but it increasingly looks like being only a matter of time before the deal is officially done.
