Samuel Saiz is set to undergo a medical at Getafe next week as he draws closer to a sensational exit from Leeds United, according to a Spanish-based journalist.

ESPN FC editor David Cartlidge reported on his personal Twitter account on Thursday night that Saiz is expected to join the La Liga outfit on an initial loan with an option to buy at the end of the season.

Cartlidge quoted Getafe president Angel Torres as saying the club’s players are already aware of the identity of the new arrival but stopped short of naming him as Saiz s “it would anger the English team”.

OPINION

Now the cat is out of the bag, this story is developing at a rapid pace. It appears things have been bubbling away in the background as Saiz attempts to engineer a return to his Spanish homeland. Quite why Leeds would allow one of their key and most valuable players to leave on a loan-to-buy deal is something of a mystery. Surely, they must put their foot down and demand instead a handsome profit on the 27-year-old, who joined from  Huesca for £3million the summer before last. He might have only started one of the last seven Championship matches, but Saiz is an outstanding player at this level when on song and one of the best in his position in the entire division. Getafe would be getting a low-risk deal. Leeds might be losing an unsettled player, but also one who is a key asset as they look to secure an automatic promotion spot. They must instead on a £5million-plus fee or tell Getafe where to go.
