Leeds United have secured the option to extend the contract of Mateusz Klich by 12 months, according to Yorkshire Evening Post correspondent Phil Hay.

He has written in a column for the regional newspaper that the first-team star signed a three-year deal when he joined from Dutch side FC Twente in the summer of 2017.

But the Yorkshire Evening Post have revealed for the first time that the agreement includes an option in Leeds’ favour which allows them to extend his term by a further 12 months until 2021.

Smart work by Leeds. The club were maligned, including by this writer, for securing so many players to long-term deals in the summer of 2017, both new boys and ones who had been on the payroll for some time. But the farsightedness is starting to pay off in a way that seemed inconceivable at the end of last season, when the team was renowned only for its mediocrity. Indeed, Poland international wasn’t even in it at that time, send back to the Dutch Eredivisie on loan as the door appeared to have been shut on his Leeds career. Back in the fold over the summer, no player has been more transformed under Marcelo Bielsa, not even Kavin Phillips. Klich has started every league game and been integral to the team shooting to the top of the league. He has been the leader of the Leeds pressing from the front, and has added goalscoring to his repertoire, with five strikes from his 16 league matches this season as well as four assists. United are well placed to secure the 28-year-old to a further long-term deal at their leisure.
