A section of Southampton fans have been in meltdown on Twitter after it was confirmed that vice-chairman Les Reed has been sacked by the club.

The Saints posted a statement on their official website announcing that Reed has left St Mary’s as the south coast club aims to get results back on track by revamping their “football operations team”.

Southampton have already begun the search for Reed’s replacement and some fans are thrilled with the decision to cut ties with the 65-year-old after eight years at St Mary’s.

COMMENTARY:

Many Southampton fans look as though they have gotten their wish with Reed being relieved of his duties at the club – it could be a huge mistake though. West Brom did a similar thing last season when their Chinese owner sacked chairman John Williams and chief executive Martin Goodman, and look where it got them. Obviously different clubs and different people have different reactions to these kinds of things and once Reed is replaced, the Saints could go marching back up the table and avoid relegation again. However fingers must be pointed at the manager and the playing squad. Mark Hughes barely kept the Saints up last season and his summer signings are yet to show that they are good enough. Southampton are 16th in the table and still have the same issues that they had last season. They may just avoid the drop this term due to the fact that there are four teams that are much worse than them.
