Eddie Gray has claimed that Leeds United manager Thomas Christiansen should have played Pablo Hernandez from the start against Brentford.

The Whites suffered another crushing defeat on Saturday as they fell to a 3-1 away loss against Brentford.

Neal Maupay put the hosts in front in the first-half after capitalising on an individual error from Leeds goalkeeper Andy Lonergan.

Ezgjan Alioski drew the visitors level with a headed goal after 67 minutes, but Brentford struck twice in the closing minutes through Yoann Barbet and Ryan Woods to take the three points.

The Yorkshire giants have now lost six of their last seven league games and have slipped down to 10th in the Championship table.

Hernandez was named on the bench against Brentford and was introduced to the action at half-time by Christiansen.

The 32-year-old attacking midfielder made a positive impact off the bench as he helped his side get back into the game and Gray has stated he should have been in the starting XI.

“I said before the game I would have played Hernandez today [against Brentford],” Gray told LUTV. “I just felt that it was the type of game that we’ve got to try put them under pressure.”

OPINION

Leeds will need to make some serious changes after the international break if they are to end this mini crisis at hand and push back towards the play-off positions. The main tactical decision that should be made is making sure that Hernandez is an ever-present in the team as he has the quality to unlock defences. He may need the odd rest in mid-week games, but the Spaniard can be one of the most deadly players in the division when he is on form. Christiansen needs to make the playmaker a pivotal player in his team and opponents will dread facing him and Samuel Saiz.
