Eddie Gray has praised Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips for his performance in the win over Bristol City.

The 21-year-old starred as the Whites recorded an impressive 3-0 away win at Ashton Gate in the league.

Thomas Christiansen decided to switch to a 4-3-3 formation as Phillips lined up alongside teammates Ronaldo Vieira and Eunan O’Kane to make a formidable midfield unit.

The Yorkshire giants cruised to a much-needed three points courtesy of goals from Samuel Saiz (two) and Pierre Michel Lasogga to help them rise to fifth in the Championship table.

Gray singled out central midfielder Phillips for his display against Bristol City and felt that he supported the attack well.

“I thought Kalvin Phillips did well. Holding the ball up even when he is up front alongside the centre-forward, bringing people into the game,” Gray told LUTV.

Phillips has become a key player this season for Leeds and started every single league encounter.

He has managed to add an attacking side to his game this season with four goals so far compared to just one in the whole of the last campaign.

OPINION

Christiansen experiment with a three-man midfielder against Bristol City and it’s certainly something that should be repeated in future away matches. The duo of Vieira and O’Kane act as the protective screens in front of the back four with their combative approach, while the tenacious Phillips makes up an extra body in the centre and is also given a licence to join in with the attack. Leeds have struggled at times on the road, but may have stuck upon the right balance to make them competitive in away matches. Phillips has become an integral part of the side this season and is a mainstay in the starting XI under Christiansen.
