Eunan O’Kane took to Twitter to apologise to Leeds United fans after the team’s 3-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

O’Kane played the full 90 minutes of the derby clash at Hillsborough but it was a forgettable afternoon for the Republic of Ireland international after missing the midweek loss at Cardiff City.

The midfielder was at fault for Wednesday’s third as Kieran Lee took advantage of the visitors’ sloppiness but Leeds were already well behind after Gary Hooper’s first-half brace.

O’Kane admitted on his personal Twitter account shortly afterwards that it was a “really bad performance” from United and he was sorry for his blunder that let to the last of the game’s goals.

Leeds, for whom Pierre-Michel Lasogga hit the post, slipped to fifth with their third loss in four league games.

OPINION

Credit to O’Kane for taking responsibility for his own part in Leeds’ derby demolition. His response appears genuine and heartfelt. But supporters will be looking for evidence after the international break that the players can learn from what have been salutary lessons from three consecutive away defeats. O’Kane played in two of those matches and must look to dominate in midfield away from Elland Road, particularly against physical opposition. Thomas Christiansen has made the Irishman a fulcrum of his side, and will want that faith repaid when Leeds return to action.
