Marcus Antonsson is unlikely to ever play for Leeds United again, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The newspaper claim the likelihood is that the time of the striker, 26, at the club is “probably up” and that his “prospects at United are less than hopeful” after a wretched debut campaign at the club.

The Yorkshire Evening Post report that the tipping point came during pre-season when a wasteful appearance in a friendly at North Ferriby United in July “all but drew a line through his name”.

Antonsson signed in the summer of 2016 for a reported fee of £1.5million but started just six league matches and scored just three goals in all competitions before going completely off the radar in the second half of the campaign.

The Swede has been loaned out to League One side Blackburn Rovers for the entirety of the season and has made a reasonable impression with three goals from nine appearances.

His contract at Leeds runs until the summer of 2019.

OPINION

It is hard to see Antonsson back in a white shirt. He is a penalty box predator and the signs during the first month or two of last season were that he knows how to find the back of the net, as he has shown during his time at Blackburn. But his slight physique and poor hold-up play made it clear that he would offer little outside of the box. Leeds appear to have moved on after loaning him out and signing four new forwards this summer, three of them on permanent deals. Thomas Christiansen and Victor Orta have showed themselves to be decisive and uncompromising when it comes to transferring out what they deem to be dead wood. Antonsson has qualities, but it is hard to see him showing them again at Leeds.
