Newcastle will have to double their bid for forward Jacob Murphy if they are to convince Norwich City to sell him this summer, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Canaries value the England Under-21 winger at around £16million, double the reported £8million bid from Newcastle that was rejected.

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has urged the club to increase their initial £8million offer, but it awaits to be seen whether they will match the value set on the 22-year-old’s head by his current club.

Dazzling winger Murphy is said to be keen on a move to the North East club and link up with Benitez, but the transfer fee is preventing him from agreeing a move to St James’ Park.

He played an important role for Norwich last season following their relegation to the Championship alongside Newcastle, making 40 appearances across all competitions, scoring nine goals and chipping in with eight assists.

He also played a big part for England Under-21s this summer, appearing in each of their four matches during the Under-21 European Championships in June.

Newcastle have been frustrated in the transfer window this summer bringing in just two names so far, missing out on loan moves for Chelsea youngsters Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Christian Atsu joined on a permanent deal from the Blues after impressing during a loan spell last season, while the Magpies also brought in Eibar defender Florian Lejeune.
