Newcastle in hunt for Ajax defender Reidewald

Newcastle are in the hunt to secure the signing of Ajax’s 20-year-old defender Jairo Reidewald this summer, according to Voetbal International.

The Dutch football magazine claim on their website that the Magpies are in a race with fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace to sign the highly rated centre-back, who is also a Netherlands international.

They state that Newcastle and new Palace manager Frank de Boer are willing to table an offer of £9million (€10million) to secure his signature, having come through the youth system at the Dutch giants.

The defensive enforcer started last season brightly, starting in all of Ajax’s Champions League qualifiers and holding a place in the starting XI for the club’s opening league fixtures.

However, as the season progressed, he found his game time limited, as he spent the majority of the season on the substitutes bench.

Overall he managed to appear 32 times for Ajax during the campaign, including a place in the starting XI for their Europa League final against Manchester United, turning out at left-back.

Despite his young age, Reidewald also has international experience, having appeared for the Dutch national side in three European Championship qualifiers back in 2015.

His debut came in the starting XI for their 3-0 defeat to Turkey, again starting at left-back, while he also appeared in a victory Kazakhstan and a loss to the Czech Republic.
