The Frenchman becomes the second player to complete a move to the Magpies in the summer transfer window after Christian Atsu signed on a permanent deal from fellow Premier League side Chelsea.
He is predominantly a centre-back but his versatility is such that he can also slot in at the defensive midfield position.
After the club had announced the news, the Newcastle supporters took to social media to express their thoughts and the majority of fans appeared to be pleased that their club had finally secured a new player ahead of next season.

The defender should find it easy to adapt to life in England as he has already spent some time with fellow Premier League side Manchester City.
Lejeune failed to make a single league appearance with the Manchester club and he will be determined to prove himself at the very highest level next season.
The Frenchman enjoyed a great campaign with Eibar last season, helping them to secure a 10th place finish in La Liga.
