Leeds activated Ekuban buy-out clause

|

Leeds United committed heavily to Caleb Ekuban after triggering the release clause in his Chievo contract, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The regional newspaper claim that United paid £500,000 to the Serie A club to buy Ekuban, who had entered the final 12 months of his deal.

The Yorkshire Evening Post report that Leeds have forked out significant money on the salary of the Italian-born striker of Ghanaian descent given the agreement reached.

He has signed a four-year contract that runs until 2021 in a demonstration of Leeds’ faith in his ability to make a major impact in the Championship next season.

Ekuban became the seventh of United’s nine summer signing on Tuesday night after six weeks of negotiations with Chievo, who he joined in 2011.

The 23-year-old has spent much of the subsequent period out on loan and enhanced his reputation considerably while at Albanian top flight side Partizani Tirana last season,  scoring 18 goals and supplying five assists from 42 matches in all competitions.

At Leeds, Ekuban is set to compete for the attacking midfield slots behind main spearhead Chris Wood, who scored 30 goals for Leeds last season and topped the Championship charts with 27 strikes.

However, no other player reached double figures, with Souleymane Doukara, Pablo Hernandez and defender Kyle Bartley each pitching in with six goals apiece.
