Leeds United have announced that the women’s team have returned to the club’s fold – and fans have taken to Twitter to express their universal support.

The Championship club released a statement on their official website on Monday afternoon in which it was confirmed that Leeds Ladies have completed a move to become Leeds United Ladies ahead of the new season.

The team – who play in the FA Women’s Premier League Northern First Division – have been re-affiliated with the club after a three-year absence.

They will play their home games at Wheatley Park Stadium, Garforth as well as two fixtures per season at Elland Road.

Leeds United Ladies first team will also train at Thorp Arch and wear the same kit as the men’s first team.

The return of the women’s side was lauded by supporters on Twitter, who praised new owner Andrea Radrizzani for following through on his promise to reverse what was an unpopular decision by his predecessor Massimo Cellino.

Leeds United Ladies Football Club was originally disbanded in 2014 after Cellino controversially withdrew his support.

The women’s team was left without financial backing and rebranded as ‘Leeds Ladies’.

Radrizzani had hinted earlier in the year at the prospect of women’s football returning to the Elland Road club after replying to a fan on Twitter.
