Everton firmly rebuffed in Sigurdsson pursuit

Everton have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Gylfi Sigurdsson after Swansea chief Chris Pearlman said the Welsh side had no intention of selling the 27-year-old.

The Toffees were reported by ESPN to have had a £27million bid for the Icelandic midfielder rejected over the weekend, with the Liverpool Echo claiming that the Swans were looking for a fee closer to £40million this summer.

That fee would see the Merseyside club break their transfer record for the second time this summer, after they secured the signing of Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for a reported £30million.

They have also signed Dutch midfielder Davy Klaassen for £23.6million as the Toffees look to improve on a seventh placed finish last season.

However, Swansea’s chief operating officer Pearlman told Wales Online, who report Everton’s bid for Sigurdsson to have been £30million, that they would not entertain any deals which did not benefit his club.

He told the Welsh news website: “There is absolutely no desire at all to sell Gylfi Sigurdsson.

“We are not going to do a deal that is not good for the football club.

“We all love watching him play and we want him here next year.”

Sigurdsson led the way for Swansea as they secured their Premier League survival, eventually finishing in 15th place having seen three managers take the helm during the season.

The 50-time-capped Icelandic international played in all of the Swans’ top flight fixtures, scoring nine goals and contributing 13 assists, and is contracted at the Liberty Stadium until 2020, having signed an extension last summer.
