Defender Ben Heneghan is staying calm about reported interest from Rangers and insisted he plans to begin pre-season at current club Motherwell.

Ibrox manager Pedro Caixinha is looking to strengthen his defensive options this summer and Sky Sports previously reported he was in a three-way battle with Cardiff and Reading to sign the English centre-back.

The defender has just one year remaining on his contract at Motherwell, and he is expected to leave this summer.

The 23-year-old joined his current club from Chester City last summer and has since become a mainstay of their back line.

He has made 43 appearances in all competitions, and only missed one match of their league campaign.

Speaking to the Glasgow Evening Times, Heneghan remained coy on Rangers’ reported interest in him.

“As far as I know, I’m a Motherwell player. We’ll see what happens over the summer,” he said.

“But I’ll be back in here pre-season, as far as I know. There hasn’t been any contact with me. I just keep my head focused. If something happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, I’m happy here.

“It would be some leap from non-league, you could look at it that way. But I just keep my head down, enjoy my summer and get ready for pre-season.”

Heneghan is a former England C international, having made three appearances for the amateur outfit, before turning professional with Motherwell.

Caixinha needs to overhaul his squad if he is to challenge Celtic next term, after his side finished a massive 39 points behind their traditional rivals in the league.

The Gers were also beaten on five occasions by the Hoops this campaign, including two 5-1 defeats.

Caixinha is looking to bolster every area of his squad this summer and Scottish Sun claimed on Thursday that he has entered negotiations with Mexican star Carlos Pena.
