Rangers are in the race to sign Motherwell defender Ben Heneghan, according to a report.

Sky Sports claim that the Gers in a battle alongside Reading and Cardiff for the signature of the 23-year-old Englishman.

It is understood that the centre-back has just one year remaining on his deal and Is expected to leave Fir Park in the summer.

The report details that Championship pair Reading and Cardiff have already made initial enquiries about a potential transfer.

Heneghan has been an ever-present in the Motherwell starting line-up this season and is fighting relegation from the Scottish top flight, which is said to be one of the reasons he will move on.

The defender has made 40 appearances across all competitions so far this campaign and picked up seven yellow cards.

He has missed just one of his side’s league fixtures due to a suspension and Rangers feel he could improve their side next season.

Heneghan has made a positive impact during his first season in Scottish football and made a seamless transition since his move from Chester.

Pedro Caixinha is expected to make drastic changes to his squad in the summer and is believed to be searching for defenders to replace Clint Hill and Philippe Senderos.

The Gers have conceded 40 goals so far in the league this season and that is 16 more than champions Celtic.
