Rangers have opened talks with Leon star Carlos Pena with a view to a summer transfer, according to the player as quoted in a Scottish Sun report.

The newspaper cite the Mexican playmaker saying “we are negotiating” when asked about the Glasgow giants have entered negotiations.

It is said that Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha knows the attacking midfielder well from his spell as Santos Laguna manager in Mexico, who play in the same division as Leon.

Pena is known as ‘Gullit’ in Mexico because of his resemblance to Dutch all-time great Ruud Gullit.

The midfielder has been a mainstay of Leon’s midfield this term and has made 23 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and supplying one assist.

He has been utilised in a number of roles by Javier Torrente this season, seeing him play on the left-wing, as a second striker and as an attacking midfielder.

Pena has been capped by Mexico on 19 occasions, and he has scored two goals, however he has not been included in the national squad since the 2016 Copa America.

Caixinha needs to rebuild his squad if he is to challenge Celtic next term, after a disappointing third-place finish this season.

The Hoops also won five of the six Old Firm derbies this campaign, highlighting the fact Rangers are still a long way behind their traditional rivals.
