According to reports from ESPN this morning, Colombian international Jackson Martinez has confirmed he’ll be joining Atletico Madrid ahead of next season.
The FC Porto striker has been nothing short of prolific during his three seasons at Estadio do Dragao, amassing 92 goals in 132 appearances across all competitions to claim three consecutive Primeira Liga Golden Boots.
The 28 year-old confirmed his intentions to leave the Dragons earlier this month as reports of a £25million release clause in his contract emerged, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United all linked – as This Is Futbol revealed two weeks ago.
Amid rumours of a potential move to AC Milan or Atletico Madrid, Martinez informed the press on Monday that he’d reveal his next club once his involvement in the Copa America came to an end.
Colombia were eliminated by Argentina via a penalty shoot out yesterday evening and the 6 foot 1 striker has kept his word, revealing that he’ll be joining Diego Simeone’s Atletico outfit.
“I can confirm I am going to Atletico,” ESPN report, citing quotes from Spanish publication AS.
“I am going there for four years but I still do not know when I will be introduced.
“I have had great progression, always learning, always growing and now I’m going to Atletico where I hope to help the team and continue to grow as a player,” he added.
