Antonio Conte is expected to replace Tottenham Hotspur wing-back Sergio Reguilon with Ryan Sessegnon on the weekend if fit enough to play.

This is according to the reliable Alasdair Gold, who was speaking on his YouTube channel after the recent defeat on the weekend to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Who should start on Saturday?

Reguilon started his first game of the month having returned against Aston Villa from his recent injury issue, which saw him miss one game (via Transfermarkt).

However, it was apparent the Spaniard did not impress against the Seagulls, as Gold awarded the 25-year-old with just a 4/10 rating after the match.

And Gold feels, if fit enough to start, Conte will overlook Reguilon in favour of Sessegnon this weekend for their next game which comes away to in-form Brentford.

He said: “I just feel that with his [Reguilon] pace, he should be doing so much more when he gets in the final third, but he was very poor, to be honest, yesterday [Saturday]. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Sessegnon comes back into the team for Brentford. If Conte feels he’s fit enough to start a match, you kind of felt that before his injury he was being preferred, and I think that’s what we’re seeing – goals and assists.

“So if – and it’s an if, because obviously, they’ve got to get him to the right place physically and also mentally in his confidence in his hamstring – if they can get him to that place for next Saturday, I wouldn’t be stunned if Sessegnon starts.”

TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…

We absolutely agree with Gold’s thinking ahead of the game against the Bees. For a player who cost Spurs £27m, Reguilon simply has not done enough to live up to the price tag.

The Spaniard has not shown enough quality in attack to suggest he should remain in the starting XI and that can be seen over his Spurs career, with just nine assists across all competitions in almost two seasons now.

Sessegnon appeared to have become Conte’s favoured option when both were fit in February, with the 21-year-old building up a consistent run in the starting XI.

But there is clearly still some concern over Sessegnon’s fitness, with Reguilon coming on ahead of the Englishman against Villa despite both being on the bench.
