Newcastle United’s humiliating defeat to Cambridge United made one thing clear, in the absence of Callum Wilson they need reinforcements up top.

After the links to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang earlier on in the window, the fans are distraught to see that their new target is Burnley’s Chris Wood. That’s some leap from a former Golden Boot winner down to someone in a relegation scrap with the Magpies.

Would you take Chris Wood at NUFC?

The Magpies hope that they can sign him this week, but the fans don’t! The news that was originally reported in The Telegraph, was then relayed to supporters via NUFC360 on Twitter.

What the Newcastle fans said about the Wood links

“We’re down, he’s not a prolific goal scorer, we’d be lucky if he gets 12 a season.” @HorsfallRobin

“Hahaha confirm relegation.” @_SeanNUFC

“What’s the plan here? Buy our relegation rivals’ best players and hope?” @nigsytaylor

“Why would Burnley sell their best striker to us?” @NEASTLAD

“We going down.” @NUFCK9E5

“Even in our current plight we should be aiming for better.” @DarrenClarkDC

“Wow, our ambition has plummeted ridiculously quickly. If Wood isn’t scoring the goals to keep Burnley up, why would he be able to do it for us?” @The_21st_Doctor

The New Zealander only has three goals and no assists to his name this campaign, despite racking up 21 appearances for the Clarets.

That’s the sort of form that has Burnley struggling with the Toon at the foot of the table. The only positive you can see to this signing is that you’re weakening a relegation rival.

How many seasons did Siem de Jong spend on Tyneside?

That being said, you only sell to your rivals for an inflated price, so the signing could unintentionally scupper the Toon Army. It seems like a strange rumour to be flying about, but if it does come true, Wood will need to improve his output in front of goal.
