Newcastle United fans will have been ecstatic with their team’s result on Saturday but their joy may have been overshadowed by the loss of Joelinton through injury in the first half.

Jonjo Shelvey’s 75th-minute goal was the settler against Leeds as Newcastle registered only their second win of the season. It was enough for Eddie Howe’s side to keep their survival hopes in their own hands, and also a huge boost after Norwich’s victory at Watford on Friday night.

Will Eddie Howe keep Newcastle up?

NUFC360 on Twitter posted the news about Joelinton’s departure after picking up an injury on Saturday, with these Newcastle fans duly sharing their anguish.

What these Newcastle fans said

“If things couldn’t get worse.” @liam50741995

“Midfield is non-existent now.” @mack_metty

“Big trouble on the way.” @jidecole20

“May as well turn the match off now.” @Rea_ctor

“Announce relegation.” @FPLJosh_

“End this pain, I beg.” @Jamesonthemic97

It’s clear to see the despair amongst these Newcastle supporters at the prospect of Joelinton facing a spell on the sidelines after he was forced off in the win at Leeds.

He has been converted to a midfielder under Eddie Howe from a striker, delivering some strong performances in his new role.

Who will the Toon play in the next round of the Carabao Cup after they beat Newport County on penalties?

The Brazilian has featured in 20 league games this season out of 21, highlighting his importance to the Magpies before and after the managerial change earlier in the campaign. Despite lasting just 42 minutes yesterday, he still won three tackles and five duels, along with having three shots (SofaScore), making his mark on proceedings before being forced off.

With rumours circling around potential midfield reinforcements in the final few days of the January transfer window, if this is a lengthy injury for the 25-year-old, Howe will need to act promptly to bring in a replacement before the month’s end.
