Leeds Live’s Beren Cross has been analysing Marcelo Bielsa’s squad in order to determine which of the players he believes have short, medium and long-term futures with the club. One of those who he commented on was the 18-year-old midfielder Mateusz Bogusz.

The Polish Under-21 international has made just one appearance for the first team, and that was in the EFL Cup versus Stoke City in the second round. He was named on the bench for the first-round clash with Salford City but didn’t get onto the field for the Whites (via Transfermarkt.co.uk).

Who was sent off in the second leg of the playoff semi-final against Derby County?

The player arrived in Yorkshire from Ruch Chorzow in January 2019. The deal was reportedly worth £90k and according to Transfermarkt.co.uk, his value remains at that price.

Cross believes that the player’s progress has ‘stalled this season with the Under-23s’ but he was keen to highlight that the player has ‘bundles of technical ability’ before predicting that he ‘could be a gem in two or three years’. Given Bogusz’s age, it’s clear that he’s one very much for the future and so whilst his development may have slowed it feels unlikely that the club will give up on him at this stage.

Can Mateusz Bogusz go on to become a star player for Leeds United?

Marcelo Bielsa’s current central-midfield options include Kalvin Phillips, Mateusz Klich, Jordan Stevens, Jamie Shackleton and Adam Forshaw (via Transfermarkt.co.uk). At the time of the league’s suspension, the Whites were sitting top of the Championship and closing in on promotion to the Premier League. You could argue that if and when it is safe to resume and if Leeds become a top-flight club next season, it could be more difficult for the young midfielder to break through. However, Cross certainly believes he’s talented enough, and in his view, it’s all about how well he applies himself.
