At the time of writing this, many Leeds United fans have been reacting on social media as The Athletic’s Phil Hay has posted a tweet sharing reports that “all EFL matches” will be suspended.
Hay’s recent tweet shares reports that surfaced on Friday morning from The Athletic’s Simon Hughes, who announced via his Twitter account that the “EFL will be suspending all games”.
Hay stated that the reports claiming that the EFL are set to suspend all games shouldn’t come as a surprise “after last night’s events”. The Athletic’s Leeds United writer may be referring to the announcement late on Thursday from Arsenal, who confirmed via their official club website that “head coach Mikel Arteta” has fallen ill.
Following Arsenal’s announcement regarding Arteta, Hay took to Twitter to share his view that “a planned and sensible suspension is the way to go“.
Some Leeds United fans have been reacting to Hay’s recent tweet on the potential suspension of EFL matches with a sense of confusion, showing uncertainty around what happens next with regards to the current season. Read the reactions of some Leeds fans to Hay’s post in the tweets below.
Our man @Simon_Hughes__ reporting that all EFL matches to be suspended. Not a surprise after last night’s events. #lufc

How can you void a season that is over 75% complete?! The financial implications on clubs in promotion, European and relegation places can’t just be ignored. Either end the league now based on standings, or play behind closed doors in a month and cancel the Euros.

And then this:?
How about:
L’pool win the PL (they have anyway),
Bottom 2 go down.
Top 2 from Champ get promoted. Then teams in 15th-18th in the PL have a 8 team playoff with the teams in 3rd-6th in the Championship to decide who either stays up or gets promoted! Sorted!??????

What’s the point of government / medical advise when the @EFL ignore it? ????

What happens in the virus gets worse or doesn’t improve and it’s the middle of July and we still have 9 game to play. What happens with the likes of White, Harrison etc who’s loans finish at the end of July?

I’m going to have to stay off Twitter for now. The worry about #lufc is making me sick, never mind #coronavirus

Its 80% complete to be more precise – if the season is cancelled and wiped out the can of worms it opens up is never ending – contracts inc Bielsas, loan players, refunds for season ticket holders, clubs tumbling into debt with no income to pay players and debts – on it goes

Is voiding the results really possible? Surely fans entitled to refunds on all games this season if that’s the case? An absolute mess.

What does that mean though Phil!?

What do we think?
With just nine games left to play in the 2019/20 Championship season, Leeds currently sit at the top of the table. As a result, many Leeds fans may have been hoping to see their side achieve promotion to the Premier League this season.
Considering that their club are in a positive position to achieve promotion, it may be understandable why some Leeds fans have been reacting with concern with regards to what will happen next if games are suspended.
However, following the news that a Premier League manager has fallen ill, it may be the right decision to suspend football matches to prevent the spread of this disease.
