Phil Hay has claimed that Leeds were going to look for a central midfielder, but Adam Forshaw is back out and training.

The Athletic reporter speaking in his Q and A said that Leeds are hopeful Forshaw will be ok.

He was asked: “Phil, at the start of the window there were rumours of Leeds looking at Luke Freeman, is there anything to this?”

He replied with: “Apparently not. They’d only go for a centre mid if there was doubt about Forshaw’s ability to get over his injury and play again this season. He’s back training and the club are hopeful about him.”

This is a big boost for the Whites who have had to play Kalvin Phillips and Mateusz Klich in almost every game while they wait for the return of Forshaw.

Forshaw has been missing since the beginning of October with a hip injury, but Marcelo Bielsa stated last week that he would be back on grass this week.

However, it is unclear how far away he is from a return to the first team.

The 28-year-old, who is valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, has missed 20 matches of Leeds’ season, but the light is at the end of the tunnel for the former Middlesbrough midfielder.

Phillips and Klich played every game over the festive period, and the return of Forshaw should ease the burden off them. The Leeds man has made 52 appearances for the Yorkshire club since signing in January 2018.

In what is still a hotly-contested promotion race, having as many men as possible fit could prove key.
