Nixon: Leeds takeover is not there yet

Reliable journalist Alan Nixon has claimed that talk of a potential Qatari takeover of Leeds United means nothing until a concrete offer is made.

According to the Financial Times, the current owners of PSG are looking to make a foray in the English game, with Elland Road touted as a preferable destination.

But Nixon has suggested that any talk of a takeover bid is overhyped.

Writing on his personal Twitter, when asked about the matter, he said: “PSG people have been looking to buy a club for some time. Still are.

“Latest story just put a few old lines together.

“What it needs is a concrete offer. Not there yet.”

OPINION

Nixon knows his stuff, and his comments here feel like a mix of common sense an insider knowledge. The fact that he claims that the rumours are predominantly regurgitated would seem to add substance to any suggestion that a deal is not forthcoming, and if that is the case then only a concrete offer will go any way to representing significant progress. The feeling you get from this is that it is a bit of a non-starter. Radrizzani seems reluctant to sell up, and even if he were, you have to wonder whether it would be the best thing for Leeds. You only have to look at Manchester City, or PSG for that matter, to see the effects that vast reserves of oil money can have on a club. Both of those sides, for all of their success, feel more like tourist destinations than clubs sometimes, and honestly, that doesn’t feel like the Leeds way in the slightest.
