Danny Murphy was asked for his thoughts on Leeds United and Sheffield United’s battle for automatic promotion from the Championship and revealed who he was hoping to see emerge victorious.

The former Liverpool player shared he had fond memories of Leeds so hoped to see them go up automatically ahead of the Blades.

However Murphy made it clear that he didn’t mean any disrespect to Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder as he thought the manager had done sensational at the Blades.

“Because of my memories of them I would like to see Leeds go up that’s what I was going to say,” said Murphy on talkSPORT (Monday April 22nd, 10:09am).

“That’s not against the job Chris Wilder has done as he has been sensational at what he has achieved at that club.”

OPINION

Murphy is quick to point out that believes Wilder has done a fantastic job at Sheffield United, but that doesn’t stop him picking Leeds ahead of them. The pundit ahead of making this remarks did casually mention Leeds fans, so you feel that they played a part in him preferring to see the Whites achieve the easier path to the Premier League. Murphy clearly wouldn’t be against Sheffield United joining the Whites in the Premier League, but his remarks clearly highlight the fact that the play-offs are no guarantee. Also given that he didn’t even mention Norwich City, it shows he is expecting them to wrap up automatic promotion shortly and not dramatically drop the ball. Leeds fans will no doubt appreciate Murphy giving their side his support, as he has done it after the surprise loss to Wigan. There’s probably a lot of Leeds fans feeling glum after their side failed to beat Wigan, as it was clearly a blow to their automatic promotion hopes.
