Sam Allardyce claimed that Tottenham only needed to sign one or two top-quality players in the summer in order to get up to speed with Manchester City and Liverpool.

The former England boss was asked by Ray Parlour how much money Spurs, Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal needed to spend in order to catch up with the two Premier League sides battling for the title this season.

However Allardyce revealed that with one or two top-quality acquisitions Spurs would be on par with Man City and Liverpool, whereas Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United need to add four or five players to their squads.

“A lot of money that’s what I’m saying, you look at the spend last year by Liverpool was £170million I think it was on four players,” said Allardyce on talkSPORT (Monday April 22nd, 8:13am).

“And I think Man City didn’t do it this season but brought in Mahrez the season before and spent £250million in one season and I think you look at Arsenal, Chelsea, Man United…Tottenham, I think Tottenham have the best chances of adding to the squad as I think they may only need one or two top-quality players that will get them up to speed with Manchester City and Liverpool.

“I think the others they’re looking at maybe four to five players.”

OPINION

This is surprising in many ways as normally everyone is urging Spurs to go wild in the transfer market. However Allardyce believes they need to do only a little bit of business to catch up with their Premier League rivals Man City and Liverpool. Yet it’s worth noting that he thinks they need to make top-quality signings, which means they will likely still have to splash some serious cash. Spurs have avoided making signings in the last couple of transfer windows, and you feel their new stadium could be the reason why they’re not splashing cash on new acquisitions. However after two quiet transfer windows, maybe the summer window will see Spurs act and add to their squad. While Allardyce’s verdict is a very positive one to hear for a Spurs fan, he doesn’t take in to account that players could leave. There’s no guarantee that Spurs will be able to hold on to every single important member of their squad once the window opens.
