Kemar Roofe is making “good progress” in his recovery from a knee injury, according to Marcelo Bielsa.

Speaking at his media conference on Thursday, as quoted by BBC Radio Leeds journalist Adam Pope, the Argentine gave an upbeat update on the striker after he missed the last three matches.

Bielsa explained that Roofe, 26, is working hard behind the scenes as he looks to play a significant part in the promotion run-in.

OPINION

This is significant news for Leeds and their automatic promotion hopes. Roofe is the club’s leading goalscorer this season and has been one of the best forwards in the division. United demonstrated against West Brom last Friday they can cope well without the former Oxford United man, but his mobility, work ethic, skill and increasingly effective eye for goal combine to make him a real handful for second-tier defences. He is versatile, too, and played in a deeper role after Patrick Bamford was restored to the starting XI last month following the second of his two serious injuries this season. Roofe released posted an Instagram that showed he was no longer wearing a knee brace and the noises coming from the player and the club is that he could be back playing again next month. Bielsa would dearly love to be able to call upon Roofe for the final half-dozen matches of the regular campaign. It could be the difference between a top-two finish and not.
