Steven Gerrard has admitted that speculation surrounding the future of Alfredo Morelos won’t go away after the Rangers forward was linked with both Leicester and Borussia Dortmund.

Sky Sports reported earlier this week that ex-Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is interested in signing the 22-year-old and it is looking increasingly likely as though he will leave Ibrox at the end of the season.

Gerrard has been in awe of Morelos this term, with the Colombia international scoring 28 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions.

And speaking in his pre-match press conference on Thursday ahead of the trip to Hibernian on Friday night, Gerrard claimed that interest in his players proves they are doing something right.

“I’m sure the interest is flattering for Alfredo, in terms of me, nothing changes. He puts a smile on my face as he is such a top, top player. The interest and speculation are not going to go away. I’d be more worried if people weren’t interested in our players,” he said, as quoted by Rangers’ official Twitter account.

OPINION

Rangers cannot hold onto Morelos forever and the only way they might be able to prolong his stay at Ibrox would be to win the Scottish Premiership title and qualify for the Champions League this season, which is very unlikely. Morelos has been superb though and with respect to Rangers, he deserves to play in a big league somewhere and have a stab at playing in Europe’s top competition. Moving to the Premier League would put Morelos even more in the spotlight than he already is while Dortmund would be a ridiculously good transfer for the striker. Either way, Rangers need to know when they are going to maximise their profit on Morelos, and that might be this summer. If they don’t cash in on the striker before next season starts he could start looking to force a move or his form might drop. Rangers need to cash in when his value is at it’s peak, and that seems to be right now.
