Leeds United are in the hunt to sign Malmo starlet Amel Mujanic, according to Aftonbladet.

The Swedish newspaper claim the Championship giants are fighting West Ham for the midfielder, 17, amid doubts over his future at the Swedish outfit.

Former Croatia international Ivan Klasnic revealed English clubs are interesting in signing Mujanic and admitted the player could quit Malmo amid a lack of clarity on his situation and the club’s failure to hand him a professional deal

“Amel thrives in Malmo and wants to fight for a place in the first team. But if he does not get a chance in Malmo, we have to find another solution,” said Klasnic to Aftonbladet.

“There is interest from England and from other countries too. I have tried to contact the sports manager, Mr Andersson, but he does not answer either on the phone or on my SMS. It is very frustrating. I don’t know how they think about Amel.”

Leeds have overhauled their youth set-up since Andrea Radrizzani took over as owner and demonstrated a willingness to invest in youthful talent capable of playing for the first team in the future. Monday’s Under-23s triumph was further evidence of the huge strides made by the club’s age-group sides this season. With Marcelo Bielsa demonstrating huge faith in those brought through the club’s ranks, it is a great time to be a young player at Leeds. Director of football Victor Orta has been mandated to source hidden gems across the globe, although most of the true rising stars at Thorp Arch are homegrown rather than signed from overseas. Could Mujanic be a hit like January signing and fellow 17-year-old Mateusz Bogusz, or a miss like so many of the Spaniards recruited in 2017? Only time will tell, but the teenager has a decent pedigree. He is currently playing for Malmo’s Under-19s, and went on the first-team squad’s training camp to Marbella. However, he hasn’t yet been offered a professional deal, so he is available and ripe for plucking.
