The full extent of Gaetano Berardi’s latest injury at Leeds United should be clear this morning, according to Phil Hay.

The Yorkshire Evening Post correspondent reported on his personal Twitter account on Monday night that he is “expecting an update” from the Championship leaders on Berardi’s fitness after he broke down on his comeback for the Under-23s in their 3-2 win against Southampton.

Berardi limped off with what appeared to be a muscle strain as he played his first match since suffering a torn hamstring on 24 October.

OPINION

It is no doubt that it is cruel on Berardi that his first match in three months should be aborted by yet another muscle injury. But, this is not bad luck and anyone who attempts to put that forward as a credible argument must be shot down. Muscle injuries occur because players are being overtrained, overworked or overplayed. It means the training and conditioning methods are not quite right. Sure, the Switzerland international had not played in a proper game since the autumn, but he would have been working hard behind the scenes on getting into shape. Too hard, by the sounds of things. It is becoming something of an embarrassment for the Leeds coaching staff how often their senior players are breaking down with hamstring injuries. Barry Douglas is currently sidelined with his second such major problem of the season. Marcelo Bielsa needs to adapt his training methods accordingly.
