Leeds United must intervene to sort Pablo Hernandez’s contract situation amid reported interest from Birmingham.

The Sunday Mirror report that the Championship side are lining up a deal for the playmaker whose deal expires at Elland Road in the summer.

It is understood that Birmingham manager Garry Monk, who used to be in charge of the Whites, wants a reunion with the Spanish attacker.

However, this would be the ultimate insult to Leeds fans if this deal was to take place and would threaten a new level of embarrassment.

Director of football Victor Orta should be the first to admit that the transfer recruitment under his first year at the club has been a bit of a disaster, but Hernandez joining Birmingham in the summer would top the lot and leave supporters furious if he joined their former manager Monk elsewhere.

The attacker is vital to Paul Heckingbottom’s current side and has seven goals and eight assists in 35 games across all competitions this season.

Orta has already overseen some poor dealings during his time at Elland Road as the likes of Charlie Taylor, Chris Wood and Rob Green have not really been replaced adequately enough.

Leeds have had to turn to youngster Bailey Peacock-Farrell from the academy to step up to the first team, while there have been several different candidates all trial and failed at left-back.

There needs to be some major amendments made to the squad ahead of next season and the Yorkshire club need to ensure that Hernandez’s long-term future is settled.
