Ex-Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson has insisted that the current man between the sticks at Elland Road, Felix Wiedwald, needs replacing in the summer.

The 27-year-old endured yet another difficult game at the weekend as the Whites drew 2-2 at home to Bristol City in the Championship.

Visitors Bristol City took a two-goal lead into half-time with goals from Famara Diedhiou and Bobby Reid.

The opening strike came from a Wiedwald mistake as the shot-stopper came and failed to clear from a long throw-in which led to the goal.

However, Paul Heckingbottom’s side did stage a strong fightback in the second period as they earned a point thanks to goals from Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Kemar Roofe.

The result means the Yorkshire giants are eight points adrift of the play-off positions and will need to embark on a great run of form to make the top six.

Robinson has delivered a brutal putdown of Wiedwald following the result and insists that he simply needs replacing in the Leeds goal.

“I think they need another goalkeeper to be brutally honest,” Robinson said as a pundit on Sky Sports’ televised coverage of Leeds v Bristol City

“I’ve seen him (Wiedwald) a couple of times this season and he hasn’t filled me with confidence. It spreads through the team when you come out of your goal and make errors like that.

“He didn’t look confident and doesn’t look the whole package. He is 27 now and should be more developed as a goalkeeper.”

OPINION

Leeds’ goalkeeper position has been an issue all season and it once again cropped up in the league at the weekend. Wiedwald currently has his hands on the number one position ahead of Andy Lonergan, but the pair of them have made some poor mistakes when given chances this season. The Whites can’t afford silly errors from their shot-stoppers if they are to be in the race for promotion and fans are still amazed that Rob Green was allowed to leave in the summer. However, Wiedwald has enough experience in his career and should be stepping up to the plate. The German has cost his side too many points already and finding a new number one more suited to English football should be a priority in the summer.
