Leeds United goalkeeper Andy Lonergan has revealed that he did receive an offer in the January transfer window, but now wants to fight for his spot after staying at Elland Road.

The 34-year-old is still a Whites player after the close of the winter window and he was subject to strong reported interest.

Yorkshire Evening Post’s chief writer Phil Hay reported that the shot-stopper travelled to Championship rivals on deadline day, but a move to the Stadium of Light was called off after talks broke down over a contract.

Lonergan has confirmed that he did receive an offer during the January window which ultimately fell through.

The Englishman is currently the second-choice goalkeepers under Thomas Christiansen, but has still made nine appearances this season.

“I got an offer which would have provided more stability for me and my family, but in the end it didn’t feel right,” Lonergan said, as quoted by the club’s official website.

“I want to stay at Leeds and fight for my place and continue to be part of what is a brilliant dressing room, which we currently have.”

OPINION

Lonergan remaining at Elland Road is certainly a good move for Leeds as he could still play an important role in the hunt for promotion. His departure would have left the Whites promoting an inexperienced youngster to the first-team squad and an injury to first-choice goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald could have caused a crisis. Lonergan’s message is a positive one and suggests he is happy to remain with the Yorkshire giants. He has had opportunities in the starting XI this term and has looked a steady option, but it’s good to know he is on board for the second half of the season.
