Former England boss Steve McLaren is the favourite to replace Thomas Christiansen as manager of Leeds United, according to The Sun.

The newspaper claim that McLaren held talks with chairman Andrea Radrizzani and director of football Victor Orta after sitting in the director’s box for the Whites’ 4-1 loss to Cardiff City on Saturday.

The Sun report that the 56-year-old is currently leading the race to replace Christiansen, with under-fire Reading boss Jaap Stam also in the running, as is former Leeds manager Simon Grayson.

It is said that Leeds are looking to make an appointment within 48 hours, as they have a key Yorkshire derby coming up against Sheffield United at the weekend.

It is sad to see Christiansen go, as the Dane always conducted himself with great professionalism and poise during his tough time at the helm of the club. Unfortunately he may be a victim of his own success after the club stormed into an early lead in the Championship table before falling away sharply since then. A winless run of seven games on the bounce is not ideal, but you can’t help but feel that Christiansen was let down by a few of his players. Anyhow, he has been sacked, and talk must turn to his successor.
