Leeds United fans have taken to Twitter to hail under-fire striker Jay-Roy Grot for his match winning performance for the club’s Under-23s in their 1-0 win against Huddersfield on Monday night.

The 19-year-old was chosen to spearhead the attack for the development side after being omitted from the senior squad that travelled to Spain on Monday for a week-long warm weather training camp.

Grot, 19, has not scored a senior goal in 15 matches since signing from Dutch club NEC Nijmegen last summer and has attracted criticism from fans for his performances.

But the teenager made the most of his opportunity for the Under-23s as he seized on a through ball at the edge of the box to emphatically finish with a first-time driven shot and secure a win against Leeds’ Yorkshire rivals.

It was the only goal of the game and prompted some rare praise from United fans on social media.

Some expressed their shock at Grot delivering the goods even at youth-team level, while others insisted it would do his battered confidence the world of good.
