Leeds United goalkeeper Andy Lonergan will stay at Elland Road for the rest of the season after a deadline day switch to Sunderland broke down, according to Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Phil Hay.
The reliable journalist claimed on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday afternoon that Lonergan, 34, had been in talks with the Black Cats but was not able to agree terms after travelling to the North-East.
He is now on his way back to Elland Road, where he is understood to be now staying until the summer as the number two behind Felix Wiedwald.
Andy Lonergan to Sunderland is OFF. He and Sunderland haven't been able to agree the terms of his contract. On his way back to Leeds and set to stay here for the rest of the season. #lufc

The former Preston and Wolves shot-stopped, who was signed by Leeds in the summer, has made nine appearances in all competitions this season but has been less than impressive to some.
This update will no doubt serve as a major development as it could mean Leeds’ business for January is done and dusted.
Opinion
Lonergan surely signed for Leeds in the clear knowledge that he was going to be the number two option to Wiedwald so he cannot have any complaints over game-time. In fact, he has played a lot more than most number twos would get in other clubs in the Championship. Sunderland clearly did not offer him a good enough deal to convince him to leave his spot on the bench at Elland Road, which is odd. Chris Coleman may now have to look elsewhere or settle for what he has between the sticks as his side fights against relegation.
