Noel Whelan heaped huge praise onto Leeds United ace Kemar Roofe after his performance in the win over Burton on Boxing Day.

The Whites recorded a narrow 2-1 away win against Burton on Tuesday and the 24-year-old scored the decisive goal of the game.

Roofe managed to break in behind the defence in the second-half and calmly finish his shot beyond the goalkeeper into the bottom corner.

The Englishman has now scored 10 goals across all competitions this season and has thrived recently from playing in a centre-forward position.

BBC pundit Whelan raved about the striker for his tireless display against Burton, which has left his side just five points adrift of the automatic spots in the Championship.

“Really pleased for him because he worked the line really well, he was trying to hold the ball up against two very physical centre-halves,” Whelan told BBC Radio Leeds.

“He never stopped working or believing. In the end it came down to the one critical moment and that’s the one-on-one moment and he came out on top.”

OPINION

Roofe put in a great shift against Burton on Tuesday and was rewarded with his golden chance in front of goal that he took. The pacy attacker has managed to seize his opportunity in recent weeks at leading the line and it could be difficult for teammate Pierre-Michel Lasogga to overtake him in the pecking order. Roofe has played a large part of his Leeds career out wide, but has proved to manager Thomas Christiansen that he can be highly effective in a central role. The forward has now managed four goals in his last two away league matches and his speed on the counter attack is perfect for games on the road.
