Leeds United have confirmed a new deal for defender Pontus Jansson on Wednesday afternoon – and the club’s supporters are thrilled with the news.

The Whites have revealed on their official website that the 26-year-old has penned a new five year deal.

His new deal will now expire at the end of the 2021/22 season and he is the latest first teamer to sign since Thomas Christiansen joined as manager in the summer.

He only made a permanent move to Elland Road in the summer from Italian club Torino, but impressed last season during a loan spell.

The Sweden international was named in the Championship team of the season during the last campaign and is hoping to impress once again for the Yorkshire giants.

Jansson is currently going through a sticky patch where he is not guaranteed a permeant slot in the starting XI, with Matthew Pennington and Liam Cooper starting the last league match at centre-back.

He did get the opportunity to start on Tuesday night in the 3-1 defeat to Leicester in the Carabao Cup and will hope he has done enough to put himself back in contention.

Leeds fans on social media are ecstatic about the new deal for Jansson and it is clear he remains a big favourite with them.

OPINION

Jansson’s new deal has come as a bit of a shock considering he only joined in the summer, but the club are clearly keen for him to be a long-term player for them. Premier League clubs have been mentioned as interested in the past and the powerhouse centre-back is good enough for the top flight. He will get out of this mini rut he is in and has the quality to guide Leeds to promotion this season if he recapture his top form. It appears like the centre-back is currently struggling with confidence and the backing from the club with a new contract will surely boost him.
