David Prutton has been critical of Leeds United goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald for his performance against Sheffield Wednesday and stated he is the player with the most to prove at Elland Road.

The 27-year-old is currently going through a dreadful patch of form after conceding eight goals in his last three games.

He endured a nightmare display last Sunday as Thomas Christiansen’s side suffered a 3-0 hammering by Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

Sky Sports pundit Prutton believes that the German shot stopper struggled in that defeat and also feels he has a lot to prove still.

Wiedwald was signed to replace Rob Green in the summer, who was shipped on to Huddersfield despite an impressive campaign last year.

“What I have heard is some chatter about the performance of Christiansen’s goalkeeper, Felix Wiedwald, and I can’t deny that something about him created tension on Sunday,” Prutton wrote in his column for the Yorkshire Evening Post. “He didn’t look strong enough for the first goal and there seemed to be a lack of decent communication throughout.

“Of all the players at Leeds, Wiedwald arguably had the most to prove this season because of the fact that he was replacing Rob Green. It’s too early to pass a definitive verdict on him but he has to control his box better than he did against Wednesday.”

Wiedwald has become a mainstay in Christiansen’s side this season and featured in every Championship game so far.

He has kept an impressive six clean sheets so far this campaign for the Whites with is defence in imperious form at the early part of the season, but the cracks in his game are now beginning to show.

OPINION

Wiedwald came with a big expectation after his arrival from Werder Bremen and Leeds fans are disappointed so far. He enjoyed a brilliant start in English football with his six-game run of clean sheets, but in truth the back-line played a major role in that success. He has been called into action a lot more recently and is still yet to get to grips with the physicality of the Championship. Allowing Green to leave in the summer was a big gall and it’s too soon to say if that decision has been vindicated. However, Wiedwald will need to improve if Leeds are to mount a serious promotion charge this season.
