Phil Brown believes that Leeds United are one of the biggest clubs in the Championship, something that their fans will love to hear.

The current Southend United manager was talking about the Whites after their win over Bristol City at the weekend and thinks they are one of the elite clubs in England’s second-tier of football.

“If you look at the size of football clubs in the Championship, it’s got to be close. Leeds would be up their with the biggest,” Brown told Football on 5: The Championship.

Leeds are desperate to achieve promotion from the Championship this season and have started well under new boos Thomas Christiansen.

They are currently fourth-placed in the league table and occupying a play-off spot.

The Yorkshire giants picked up an impressive 3-0 away win against Bristol City on Saturday and now turn their attention to a Carabao Cup fourth round match against Leicester on Tuesday night.

Leeds supporters consider themselves to be one of the biggest clubs in England, but they have not competed in the top flight since their relegation from the Premier League in the 2003-04 season.

They still attract huge crowds with 3,000-plus away supporters attending Bristol City at the weekend and there is a belief that Premier League football will return to Elland Road in the near future.

OPINION

Leeds have made a good start in the league so far and look like being in the mix for promotion come the end of the season. However, big hitters such as Wolves and Aston Villa are also in good form after an impressive start who will be desperate for a return to the top flight. Christiansen’s side immediate future is focusing on a League Cup clash against Leicester and a good run in the competition will only improve moral in the squad. They have already eliminated Premier League opposition in Burnley and have the potential to pull off another upset, this time at the King Power Stadium.
