Carlton Palmer has stated that he wants Leeds to make a return to the Premier League but the club needs an owner that shares that same vision.

The former Elland Road midfielder played at the Yorkshire outfit during the mid-90’s and made the comments after Garry Monk was appointed the new manager of Middlesbrough earlier on in the month.

The 38-year-old abruptly left his managerial post at the club last month after failing to reach a contract agreement with the club’s current owner Andrea Radrizzani.

Monk’s decision to leave left supporters and the club’s Italian owner in shock as they are still searching for his replacement.

Radrizzani joined the Championship side in January buying a 50 per cent stake from then owner Massimo Cellino before completing the full takeover two days before Monk’s departure.

Palmer, who played as a defensive-minded midfielder during his playing days, made it clear what Leeds need to do if they are to make a return to the top tier of English football.

“I want to see Leeds back where they belong,” Palmer wrote on his personal Twitter account. “But they need owners who share that vision too.”

It has been 13 years since Leeds tasted Premier League football, with the club suffering relegation during the 2003/04 campaign after financial trouble.

Since then, they have dropped down to League One and are currently aiming to claw their way out of the Championship.

During Monk’s short tenure, they narrowly missed out on the top six, with four defeats in April resulting in them finishing five points outside of the play-off places.
