Monk sends his best wishes to Clotet

Garry Monk has stated on Twitter that he has been on a “fantastic journey” with Pep Clotet following their departures from Leeds.

The Yorkshire giants announced on Monday that Spaniard Clotet will be leaving Elland Road when his contract expires at the end of this month.

Monk, who left Leeds at the end of May, was officially unveiled as the new Middlesbrough manager 12 days ago, but Clotet made it clear in a Twitter message that he will not be joining the Englishmen at the Riverside Stadium.

As a result, the duo, who also worked with each other as manager and assistant at Premier League side Swansea, have now ended their three-year association together.

New Boro manager Monk sent this message to Clotet on his personal Twitter account after the Spaniard had thanked him for their time together.

“It’s been a fantastic journey,” said Monk. “I’m sure you will do great wherever you go. All the for you too, big man.”

Both Monk and Clotet were praised for the manner in which they turned Leeds around last season after a number of turbulent campaigns at Elland Road.

Last summer, former club owner Massimo Cellino offered them one-year rolling contracts but within months of their arrivals, Leeds were fighting for promotion.

They were sitting in the top-six for the majority of the Championship campaign, but they ended up losing out on a play-off spot by five points.

Despite that heartache towards the end of the season, many ex-players and supporters felt that both Monk and Clotet were building a strong team in Yorkshire.
