Huddersfield Town beat Reading in the play-off finals to earn promotion to the Premier League – and Leeds fans on Twitter have congratulated them for their success.
David Wagner’s side secured a dramatic win via a penalty shootout to send the Yorkshire club to the top tier of English football at Wembley on Monday afternoon.
It was a typical nerve-racking final which resulted in both teams failing to score after 90 minutes and extra-time, with Terriers forward Isaiah Brown producing the best opportunity of the match.
Christopher Schindler struck the winning spot-kick for Huddersfield, who beat the Royals 4-3 on penalties which sent one-half of Wembley into party mode.
At the start of the Championship season, bookmakers believed that Wagner’s side had more of a chance of getting relegated than earning promotion.
However, they have defied the odds and out trumped the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds, Aston Villa and Derby, who will be playing Championship football next term.
Leeds supporters congratulated their neighbours on social media, with one fan stating that it will be “us next year” following his side’s seventh place finish.
Another fan thinks that Huddersfield promotion is an “incredible” feat and that he is “jealous” as a Leeds supporter.
Overall, the Elland Road faithful did seem disappointed that their team is not in Huddersfield’s position but they did congratulate them on their success.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
I think if your going to lose I think I would rather be in the semis than losing on pens at Wembley well done Huddersfield #lufc
