According to reports from Calcio Mercato, Louis van Gaal could sign former Manchester City star Nigel de Jong in January at a discount price.
The tough-tackling midfielder picked up an FA Cup and a Premier League title during his four years at the Etihad before departing for AC Milan in summer 2012.
The Netherlands international has been one of the club’s more consistent performers amid their slump into mid-table mediocrity and was linked with a move to Manchester United during the summer – in no small part due to his impressive performances under Louis van Gaal at the 2014 World Cup – but ended speculation upon signing a contract extension in June, keeping him at the San Siro until 2018.
Since, however, the 30 year-old has found himself a peripheral figure in manager Sinisa Mihajlovic’s plans; making just four starts out of a possible twelve in Serie A and not featuring in any competition since being hauled off at half-time in September.
Claiming ‘it is no secret’ that De Jong will look to leave Rossoneri during the January transfer window, Calcio Mercato put Manchester United in the frame as potential suitors. The Italian publication believes Milan will allow the 80-cap international to leave for a ‘relatively cheap price’.
