According to reports from ESPN, Chelsea are planning to sign a striker in January and have earmarked former Manchester United star Javier Hernandez as a potential target.

The Mexico international was a key figure for the Red Devils under Sir Alex Ferguson, reaching double figures in the Premier League’s scoring charts for three consecutive seasons despite predominantly featuring for the bench.

But he struggled to have the same impact under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, scoring just four league goals under the Scot and sent out on loan to Real Madrid for his only season with the Dutchman at the Old Trafford helm, and was resultantly sold to Bayer Leverkusen on August 31st.

Having since bagged twelve goals in 19 outings for club and country, however, including a Bundesliga return of four in seven, Chelsea are looking to bring the 27-year-old back to the Premier League in January after just a matter of months at the BayArena.

However, Leverkusen will be reluctant to sell based on recent comments from general manager Michael Schade, who said on Monday; “He’s a legend in Mexico and it’s incredible the amount of media interest this has sparked. He has exceeded all of our expectations, even for the Bayer [holding] company. As an advertising package, he works without any concerns.”

Chelsea are also scouting Valencia’s Paco Alcacer according to ESPN, the 22-year-old striker who contributed five goals to Spain’s Euro 2016 qualification campaign and has bagged as many in ten La Liga outings this season.

Reports earlier this morning, meanwhile, linked the Blues with long-term Arsenal target Gonzalo Higuain.
