According to reports from The Daily Star this afternoon, in-demand defensive midfielder William Carvalho is set to sign a new contract at Sporting Lisbon.

The Portugal international, is widely regarded as one the most exciting prospects in European football, having claimed the Player of the Tournament award at the summer’s U21 European Championships and featured for the senior squad at Brazil 2014.

Scouts from Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Spurs allegedly watched the 6 foot 2 enforcer in action during the U21 Euro final whilst reports in September revealed Liverpool and Chelsea could both launch bids in January.

Arsenal, meanwhile, reportedly made offers for the 23 year-old during the last two summer transfer windows, which were both rejected by the Portuguese outfit.

But according to The Star, Sporting president Bruno de Carvalho (no relation) has suggested the midfielder is on the verge of signing a new contract.

“We will have news about it sooner or later,” he told RTP Africa. “What he wants and what we want are perfectly tuned.”

Carvalho’s current contract expires in 2018 and is known to include a £33million release clause.
