William Carvalho

According to reports from The Metro this afternoon, Chelsea are ‘weighing up the transfer’ of Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho.

The Portugal international is widely regarded as one the most exciting prospects in European football, having claimed the Player of the Tournament award at the summer’s U21 European Championships despite missing the deciding penalty in the final against Sweden.

He’s also featured regularly in the Champions League for Sporting and made a handful of outings at last summer’s World Cup – all at the relatively tender age of just 23.

The 6 foot 2 defensive midfielder was allegedly watched by scouts from Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Spurs during the U21 Euro final and reports earlier this month claimed the Anfield outfit are considering a January bid.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are believed to have made offers for him during the last two summer transfer windows, which were both rejected by the Portuguese outfit.

According to The Metro, who cite Italian publication TuttoMercatoWeb, the Gunners and the Reds now face competition for Carvalho’s signature from Premier League champions Chelsea. But whether any potential suitor is willing to pay his rumoured £37million release clause remains to be seen.
